CHAPTER EIGHT

Fallyn sat up with a scream, clutching her chest with one hand and scrabbling for the blaster at the bedside with her other. The pain was intense and the mate bond vibrated.

“Captain? Are you all right?”

It took Fallyn a minute or two to realize her AI was speaking to her. The pain receded slightly and she drew several long, panting breaths. “It’s my mate. Something awful is happening to him right now, wherever he is. I told you we’re linked.” But were they still? The mate bond felt attenuated, fainter than at any time since they’d originally claimed each other by the waterfall on Ushandirr. “Are we on the course we previously mapped out?”

“Following your link to him, yes, captain. Should the heading remain the same?”

“I’ll come to the bridge and we can plot it again. Give the engines everything we’ve got because whatever is going on with Reede must be dire.”

“Do you need medical attention?” Roxy asked as Fallyn got out of bed, set the blaster down, within easy reach if needed and grabbed for her clothes.

“No, it’s not physical pain,” she said. “I’m not injured or impaired performance-wise.” As she tugged on her utilities and dragged a tee shirt over her head, she worried. Reede had sworn nothing would ever break the mate bond, so did this turbulence mean he was trying to sever it? Why would he do such a thing? I need to get to him sooner than later. Hastening through the corridors to the flight deck, she had bitter regrets about detouring in the opposite direction to meet with the admiral. The trip had seemed to be the higher priority at the time, as she’d trusted Reede and Walt to stay safe no matter what they were doing in their attempt to reach Mellure itself but tonight she was questioning her own judgment. “Stop it,” she said out loud. “What’s done is done and the next step is the most important.”

“I didn’t catch all of that,” Roxy said as Fallyn entered the bridge.

“Talking to myself. Didn’t your last authority ever do that?” Fallyn slid into the pilot’s chair.

“Rarely. When she did she’d usually be swearing. She was quite creative with her use of adjectives.” There was the ghost of a laugh in the AI’s voice as she recounted the memory.

After ascertaining she was still heading for the right planet, Fallyn requested all the data Roxy could find on the interstellar news and data links. While the AI was assembling her research, Fallyn went to the galley and made herself the strongest cup of synthcaff she could achieve, while mourning the lack of real coffee. Her budget didn’t extend to the luxury any longer and she’d been spoiled while in the military, receiving coffee rations as a perk.

“Ready with the first tranche of data,” Roxy said.

Fallyn stirred creamer into her synthcaff and moved to the desk in the eating area. “All right, let me have it but keep digging. I need it all. Even the tiniest detail might be helpful.
